John Winter offers a range of sands for all mould and core making processes from standard silica sands and green sands to oil bonded sands for superior casting finish.
Choosing the right sand is a fundamental part of the casting process as it can affect casting quality, setting times, consumption rates and scrappage. That’s why our sands are available in a variety of grades and grain size to suit your casting processes and personal preferences.

An artificially produced alumina silicate sand with very low thermal expansion at high heats. Widely applied in foundry technology for high thermal stressed cores and moulds. Compatible with all resins and binders and suitable for all metals. An ideal replacement for chromite sand if it is being used for expansion defects and at half the bulk density it is very cost effective.
An artificial ceramic sand with very low thermal expansion and is ideal for all ferrous applications. I certain instances it can replace zircon sand where it is used for sand expansion defects. At half the bulk density of zircon it is very cost effective.
A popular choice for mould and core making processes, silica sand is compatible with any binder type and comes in a range of sizes. The most common grain size is AFS 60 and AFS 80.
DM Red Sand
A naturally occurring sand containing clay and water used for greensand moulding. DM Red Sand patterns are often faced with an oil bonded sand to give an improved surface finish.
A graded, naturally occurring sand suitable for moulds and cores requiring high resistance to metal temperature. Typical grain sizing AFS 110.
Chromite sand is used for moulds and cores requiring high resistance to metal temperature. Typical grain sizing AFS 50.
Silica Carbide Chill Mix
A blend of fine SiC granules applied locally during moulding for the chilling of the casting face for improved solidification. Supplied as a dry mix to be used in conjunction with any binder.
Oil Bonded Sand (Petrobond®, Mansbond®, Bentomix)
A range of oil bonded sands that are used to create a superior casting finish. As the only producer of oil bonded moulding sand in the UK we offer a range of green strength grades to suit your casting process.
